Thea followed Erebus silently, her footsteps light on the metallic floor. She was still disoriented from the awakening process, but her curiosity propelled her forward. As she turned a corner, she caught a glimpse of Erebus entering a room filled with sleek, silver pods. Thea hesitated, wondering if she should follow him inside.
Thea’s hesitation was momentary, her desire for answers overpowering her trepidation. She pushed open the heavy metallic door and slipped inside, her eyes adjusting to the dimmer light within.
The room was cavernous, the silver pods lining the walls like sentinels. Thea counted at least a dozen pods, each one humming softly, a gentle blue light emanating from within. Erebus stood at the far end of the room, his back to her, his hands clasped behind him.
Thea approached him cautiously, her footsteps echoing off the metal walls. She felt a shiver run down her spine as she drew closer to the pods. Something about them seemed… off.
Erebus turned to face her, a look of quiet contemplation on his face. His eyes narrowed slightly as he took in her presence.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
Thea felt a surge of defiance at his words, but she bit back her retort. Instead, she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, “Who am I?”
Erebus’s expression didn’t change, but Thea sensed a flicker of surprise behind his eyes. He turned fully to face her, his hands still clasped behind his back, “You don’t know?”
Thea shook her head, her mind racing. She felt like she should know, like the answer was just out of reach.
“No,” she said, her voice firm. “I don’t.”

Erebus nodded, a small, enigmatic smile playing on his lips. “Come,” he said. “Let me show you.”
He turned and walked away, expecting Thea to follow. She did, her heart pounding in her chest.
Erebus led Thea to a large, circular chamber deep within the complex. The room was filled with row upon row of holographic displays, each one projecting an image of a person. Thea recognized some of them – world leaders, celebrities, influencers – but others were unknown to her.
At the center of the room stood a massive, crystalline structure, pulsing with a soft, blue light. Erebus approached the crystal, his eyes closed, his hands raised as if in worship.
“This is the Nexus,” he said, his voice full of reverence. “The sum of all human knowledge. The key to unlocking humanity’s true potential.”
Thea felt a shiver run down her spine as she approached the crystal. She could feel its power emanating from it, a strange energy that seemed to be calling to her.

“What is it?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Erebus opened his eyes, a faraway look in them. “It is the future,” he said. And you, Thea, are a part of it.” Thea felt a surge of fear mixed with excitement. What did he mean?
Thea’s eyes widened as she gazed upon the crystal, her mind reeling with the implications. She felt a sense of destiny calling to her, a sense of purpose that she had never felt before. “What do you mean?” she asked again, her voice stronger now.
Erebus turned to face her, a small smile playing on his lips. “You have a crucial role to play in the evolution of humanity,” he said. “A role that requires great courage and sacrifice.”

Thea felt a shiver run down her spine. What kind of role? What kind of sacrifice? “I’m listening,” she said, her voice firm. Erebus nodded, a look of approval on his face.
“The Order of the Veil has been guiding humanity’s evolution for centuries, he said. But there are those who would seek to stop us. You, Thea, will be our protector. Our assassin.”
Thea’s eyes widened in shock. An assassin? Her?
Thea’s mind reeled as she processed Erebus’s words. An assassin? Her? It seemed impossible, yet somehow, it felt… right. “I… I don’t know if I can do that,” she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper.
Erebus’s expression didn’t change, but Thea sensed a flicker of disappointment behind his eyes.
“You will be trained,” he said. “You will be given the skills and the knowledge you need to succeed. But first, you must understand what is at stake.”
He turned and walked away, expecting Thea to follow. She did, her heart pounding in her chest.
He led her to a large, dimly lit room filled with rows of computer terminals and holographic displays. A figure stood at the far end of the room, their back to them.
“This is Arkeia,” Erebus said. “She will explain everything.”
Thea felt a sense of trepidation as she approached Arkeia. Something about the figure seemed… off.
“Arkeia was once human,” Erebus said, as Thea drew closer. “But she has since been… augmented.”
Thea’s eyes widened as she took in Arkeia’s appearance. Her body was a mass of wires and machinery, her skin stretched taut over her metal frame. Her eyes glowed with an unnatural blue light.
Arkeia turned to face Thea, her expression blank.

“Hello, Thea,” she said, her voice like a computer. “I have been waiting for you.”
Thea felt a shiver run down her spine. Waiting for her? How did Arkeia know her name?
Arkeia’s gaze seemed to bore into Thea’s very soul. Thea felt a sense of unease, as if Arkeia could see her every thought.
“Thea,” Arkeia said, her voice dripping with an otherworldly intelligence. “You have been chosen to play a critical role in the evolution of humanity. The Order of the Veil has been guiding this evolution for centuries, but there are those who would seek to stop us. You, Thea, will be our protector.”
Thea’s mind reeled as she processed Arkeia’s words. Protector? What did that even mean?
Arkeia continued, her voice unwavering. “You will be trained to eliminate any threats to the Order. You will be our assassin.”
Thea felt a surge of fear mixed with excitement. An assassin? Her?
Suddenly, the room was filled with a blinding light. Thea raised her hands to shield her eyes, but the light was too intense. She felt herself being lifted off the ground, her body suspended in mid-air. When the light faded, Thea found herself in a vast, open plain. A figure stood before her, its back to her. The figure slowly turned, revealing a face that was identical to Thea’s.
“Welcome, Thea, the figure said. I am your future self.”
